Tips on Living On-Site During a Home Remodel

Home remodeling produces a lot of dust and debris and is generally chaotic with remodelers going to and fro, which is why we don’t recommend staying at home during a remodel. However, if you choose to do otherwise, Knockout Renovation shares tips on how to manage staying on-site during a home remodel.

Clean-Up Everyday

You have to stick to a strict daily cleaning routine if you intend to stay during home remodeling; clutter can pile up pretty fast. While remodelers clean up most of the dust and debris at the end of every workday, thorough cleaning is usually done when everything is completed. You will also need to have your trash picked up more often unless you have space in your yard to spare.

Keep the Doors Closed

Make it a habit to close the doors behind you as you move about the house. This helps keep dust levels down to a minimum. Tape the doors of rooms that will not be affected by remodeling work and will not be occupied for the time being. Your remodeler can help you prepare other areas of the house by installing plastic sheeting for areas where workers will be walking back and forth.

Separate Things That You Need to Use

You need to put furniture and valuables out of the way and protect them using dust covers or moving them offsite. You need to set your expectations that you might not be able to access any of these items for the duration of your remodeling. Separate items like your laptop and phone, as well as accessories such as power adaptors before you put your things into storage.

Plan for Your Basic Needs

Talk to your remodeler about the remodeling timeline and plan your basic needs accordingly. If the bathroom is part of your remodeling plan, expect a few weeks of not being able to use it. You probably won’t be able to prepare meals as you normally would, let alone eat them, with all the dust swirling in the air. You can prepare spaces like your garage as a temporary makeshift kitchen and dining area. You can also rent a portable toilet if you don’t have a secondary bathroom in the house.
