Shortcuts You Can’t Take on Brownstone Renovation

In this post, your trusted brownstone remodeling expert, Knockout Renovation, shares the shortcuts you shouldn’t take when you’re having a brownstone renovation project.

Things That Can Violate DOB Code

It’s important to research the things that can violate New York’s DOB code. Granted, NYC’s code is one of the most complex in the United States, which is why you’ll need due diligence before starting off on your brownstone remodeling project. Keep in mind that brownstones are large, and could come with pre-existing issues that will make them difficult to get up to code. Fortunately, brownstone renovation projects aren’t governed by rules mandated by a condo or a co-op board.

Your remodeler will tell you that brownstones are independently owned structures, giving you a greater degree of flexibility on modifying your structure, which isn’t possible with a condominium. Some exterior alterations would be closely scrutinized by local regulatory agencies, especially if it’s in a prime spot. As such, make sure that your brownstone doesn’t violate any DOB codes before moving on.

Not Replacing Items At the End of Their Lifespan

Expert brownstone remodelers start the project by checking the fundamental structure of the building to address underlying issues before moving on. These include things like asbestos, damp basements, leaky roofing, and outdated boilers. While replacing some of these things can be costly, it will compromise the safety and stability of your brownstone if left alone. As such, make sure that you replace or repair these fixtures before moving on with your remodeling project.
