Working from home has become the norm for office workers in the past year and a half, and having a home office (as opposed to working in bed or on a couch) can help maintain productivity. In today’s post, local remodeler Knockout Renovation shares important considerations for setting up a home office.
You need a home office that allows speed and efficiency. If your work requires more than just a laptop and an internet connection, your home office is the perfect place for setting them up. You can also do away with bulky office equipment — which are designed to be shared among many workers — and streamline them to ones that will fit your needs. For example, a desktop printer and scanner with wifi connectivity can work just as well without taking all the space.
Space is a luxury in today’s apartments, which is why you must maximize storage space in your home office. Taking a cue from kitchen remodeling, consider buying tall shelves or having custom ones installed. You’ll have enough storage for your electronics and office supplies, perhaps even a mini-pantry for snacks and coffee. If you end up with empty shelves, fill them with books and collectibles: they make great backgrounds for virtual meetings.
Custom lighting is one of the greatest advantages of having a home office. You can choose the right combination of ambient and task lighting that you’re comfortable with. Also, you’ll want to use as much natural light as possible: in addition to energy savings, natural lighting has been known to increase alertness and productivity.
Ideally, a home office should be in a room on its own: it prevents distractions caused by noise, and it also lets you separate your home and office lives. It also lets you “go home” by closing the door after clocking out. If this is not an option, a screen, divider, or tall furniture can mark where your home office ends and the rest of the house begins.
