Adding an Accent Wall: Some Do’s and Don’ts

Adding an accent wall, or a feature wall, with the help of an expert remodeler is a great way to bring new life to a space, offering high-impact results without setting you back by a lot. Accent walls are also versatile–you can use them to create drama in a room but they can also highlight subtle patterns instead, providing just the right amount of interest to keep a room balanced.

To make the most of an accent wall, here are some do’s and don’ts for you to keep in mind:

  • DO use complementary colors. Whatever pattern or color you choose, make sure it works with everything else in the room. Bold or bright colors are great but only if they don’t detract from the rest of the room. Never use a bold pattern or color just for the sake of it.

  • DON’T use a random wall. Accent walls are best for highlighting existing focal points. For example, in a bedroom, an accent wall is great behind the headboard. Choosing an accent wall away from a focal point makes it confusing as to where you should gaze. Use the room’s architecture as a starting point when remodeling to help you figure out where your accent wall should be located.

  • DO use mixed materials. Wallpaper and paint are not the only options available to you. Don’t hesitate to use stone, tile and reclaimed wood, among others to achieve the effect you’re going for.
