A Remodeling Guide: How Big Should Your Shower Be?

Bathrooms are usually the smallest parts of your home, which is why every inch of space counts. A lot of our clients often ask what the size of their shower should be. The remodeling experts at Knockout Renovation® shows you how to find your ideal shower size below.

An Overview of the Standard Sizes

Shower kits usually come in the standard sizes of 36 inches by 36 inches, 38 inches by 38 inches and 42 inches by 42 inches. The recommended shower size is 36 inches by 36 inches, with a clear space of at least 30 inches in front of the shower and a height of at least 80 inches, although smaller bathrooms might have trouble fitting in a shower of that size. Keep in mind that your shower’s dimensions can’t be lower than 30 inches by 30 inches, the minimum set by the International Residential Code.

Gauging the Actual Size

Next, you need to check whether that particular shower size can fit into your bathroom. Precise measurements aren’t an absolute necessity during the planning stage, but the more accurate they are, the better. If you want more concise planning—and budgeting—for your project, consult an experienced remodeler

If, however, you prefer to do it yourself, measure your bathroom starting from the back of the wall to the front of the enclosure as well as along both side walls.

Some Little-Known Tips

Apart from using a measuring tape, there’s another way to gauge the ideal shower size: stand in your bathroom with your hands outstretched and turn around in a circle. This should give you an idea of how big your shower should be.
